A Trusty 3-Item List to Boost Recovery Success

Confidence. It’s a common hurdle in recovery. To be more accurate, the obstacle is a lack of confidence.

Previous decisions and past relationships often pile up in our mind and stomp down our self-worth. We become convinced we’re beyond hope.

The negative self-talk builds into a mountain we think we can’t overcome. We start to believe we aren’t worth the effort.

Do we deserve a healthy life in recovery? Is it even possible?

The Building Blocks of Self-Worth

If you’re starting down this scary spiral, throw on the breaks with the following three steps. These will help restore your self-worth and build the confidence you need for a successful life in recovery.

#1 Write down the name of a person you admire.

This could be a role model, mentor or hero you look up to. They can be alive or deceased. You may know them personally, or they can be famous, or even fictional.

#2 Think about what it is you admire about this person.

What brought them to mind? Why are they someone you respect? Write down the three qualities you admire most about them.

Here’s the rub: Psychology experts say that the three qualities you listed are extremely significant. They’re actually qualities that you also admire in…yourself! The key, then, is to increase these qualities in your own life. When you do, your self-worth will grow.

#3 Put a plan into action.

You now know what characteristics you should focus on to boost your self-worth and confidence. So, do it! For each quality that you listed, write down five ways you can practice it in your life. Keep it simple, and keep it real. Need an example? Here you go:

Step 1: Kerry looks up to Chris.

Step 2: Kerry admires that Chris is dependable.

Step 3: To cultivate dependability in her life, Kerry writes down these five action-steps:

  • Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early to appointments, to avoid tardiness.
  • Start using phone reminders to help with organization.
  • Ask questions to fully understand what I am committing to before making promises.
  • Don’t repeat what others tell me in confidence.
  • Be honest – about my opinions and my own abilities – when I am asked to do something.

Kerry’s steps are realistic, day-to-day tasks that she can work through to develop the admirable quality of dependability.

As you work on implementing these steps, you’ll see the qualities you admire in yourself. These will continue to grow and allow you to develop a strong, confident attitude. Your renewed self-worth will help carry you through recovery for a healthy, sober life.
