For individuals who are suffering from an addiction, an inpatient addiction treatment program may be a good option. This type of treatment differs from an outpatient treatment in that patients are admitted into a treatment facility. This article will briefly describe inpatient addiction treatment.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient addiction treatment centers handle a wide variety of addictions, from drug and alcohol addictions to gambling and sex addictions. These facilities are also referred to as residential treatment programs or detox centers. They are generally for use on individuals who have tried other methods without success or for addicts who are at a high risk of harming themselves or others.

Individuals who have relapsed and found themselves going back to the beginning of the treatment cycle often have no other option for treatment than an inpatient treatment center. Typically, inpatient centers help those who also have other mental issues, such as panic disorder or severe depression.

Methods of Inpatient Treatment

When individuals are admitted into an in-patient addiction recovery program, they are entrusting their entire treatment in the hands of professionals. One reason for success is the fact that there is less stress. Addicts are not placed in situations that could trigger a relapse. They are removed from normal life situations and placed into a safe environment with 24-hour care.

Treatment inside the facility involves daily exercise to help cleanse the body, providing nutritional guidance, and helping the person focus on a healthy lifestyle. Alternative methods of treatment might include meditation or massage to encourage relaxation.

Medications are used and monitored to help the individual detox and control cravings. This is extremely important during the initial treatment to help the person deal with withdrawal symptoms.

Inpatient treatments prove very effective because individuals receive constant support from others who are going through similar addiction rehabilitation. Patients can encourage one another and provide each other with support. They can also help cheer on milestones and get each other through the next step in the treatment process. Removing the addicts from family and friends can help them realize the severity of their problem and the damaging effect it has on their lives as well as the lives of others.

What to Expect from an Inpatient Treatment

When a person is admitted into inpatient addiction treatment, an initial psychological and physical evaluation is done to determine all existing issues. Detox will be the first goal of treatment. The correct method of treatment will be determined and catered to the specific needs of the individuals. Group support will also be introduced to the individuals.

How to Choose an Inpatient Treatment

The type of treatment center that you choose will be dependent on the type of addiction you have. Other factors can include where the facility is located and the cost. When you look for a treatment facility, you should set up an appointment to visit the facility and talk to someone in charge about your goals and expectations. The better the match of the treatment center, the better your chances are for success. Ask plenty of questions so that you have a better shot at finding the right place for you or your loved one.

Some Questions to Ask Might Include:

  • How many patients do you have?
  • How many faculty members are there?
  • What types of treatment options do you offer?
  • What types of accommodations do you have?
  • How long is a typical stay?
  • Are visitors allowed during treatment?
  • What does a typical day of treatment consist of?
  • Is the patient allowed access to phone, Internet, or television?
  • Do you offer follow-up care for those who have completed treatment?

Inpatient treatment centers are often the best shot at recovery for an addict. Like all treatment programs, the success of the individuals depends largely on their ability to accept that they have a problem and are willing to work to overcome the addiction.
